Apparently, waiting until the night before the valentine’s day party at the daycare was too late to pick up cards at our local Kroger. I, with Emily in tow, spent the better part of a half hour wandering around the store, looking for appropriate valentine’s day cards that she could take to her class party (yes, she is young, but the daycare requested it). During the half hour of searching, I came up with two (yes, two) options: one of the four remaining Hannah Montana boxes of cards for $2.99 or two of the disney princesses boxes of cards for a whopping $5.99 each! Ok, so, decisions, decisions. I refused to buy the Hannah Montana cards on general principles. I do not believe that Hannah Montana is appropriate for an elementary school kid, much less for my toddler, to give out. However, my frugalness was not going to let me spend $11.98 to get enough cards for Emily to give out to her fifteen classmates.
So, I did what any good husband would do. I called my wife to tell her the situation and let her know I was going to be later than I though because I had to go somewhere else to find the cards. Ashley, loving wife that she is, did not want me to have to go elsewhere so she told me just to pick up some construction paper and glitter and she would make some valentine’s day cards. “What a wonderful idea,” I thought. “It will be easy, cut four pieces of construction paper into fourths, draw a heart on them with glitter, scrawl Emily’s name on the back with a cute saying, and voila!”
Of course, it could not be that simple. It took Ashley three hours (I did help with a lot of the cutting), but I think that the result turned out very cute. She even made an extra one so that we have one to keep!

They look so good, Ashley.

What a great idea! I bet her cards were the hit of the party. Ashley, where did you come up with the idea to make the puppies? It is so appropriate for Emily as she does love her Rosie and Dante! Jon, just for future reference, when holiday parties are approaching at school, the night before is not a great time to be searching for treats! As a teacher, I made that mistake once, and wound up going to three different stores looking for candy canes for a Christmas party. Anyway, the valentines are adorable and I bet you started a trend in her class for next year. What mom will want to use store bought valentines when they are waiting to see what Emily’s mom will come up with next? Love, Mom
Fantastic! The cards are really cute and I bet you enjoyed making them (even as you groused and grumbled a little bit). I bet Emily was happy with them too.
Here’s a heads up for a possible future crisis: always keep a cake mix, a can of icing, cupcake papers, and some sprinkles on hand. Ashley was great at volunteering me to make cupcakes for a group. Only glitch was that she only remembered to tell me at about 9:00 the night before the event!
good job parents! i love the valentine puppy cards! i was never one into making cards until after we had our emily. it was just ridiculous to send out cards to all the grandparents and great grandparents from hallmark…i mean $2-3 a card x20?!? we make ours now too!
Jo: Thanks for that fun story. I will be giving Ashley a hard time…

I know I didn’t exactly plan this well. After dinner and putting Emily to bed, I kind of forgot that I had to make them. When I realized that at 9 or 9:30, I started looking online for some ideas. I thought it would be cute to make something puppy-related since that is Emily’s favorite animal. Of course, there was a pattern. I think it came off of the kraft family site but I’d have to double check. I have some more pictures of them that I will try to get posted soon.
The best part is the saying on the back. It says “Mutts About You”.
