Thursday Morning humor

August 9th, 2007 @ 9:15 am

A recent post on Good Math, Bad Math caught my attention this morning. The article talk about mathematics being independent of a deity; mathematics is based on abstract reasoning so it will be consistent whether the universe was created by a benevolent deity or whether it just is. The article is in response to a geometry class description at a Baptist high school. However, a comment by chaos_engineer just made me laugh out loud.

Of course. Christians would be taught real geometry, with the Euclidean version of the parallel postulate.

People who practice flawed religions would naturally be more comfortable studying flawed, non-Euclidean geometries. Jews could learn Riemann’s version of the parallel postulate, Muslims could learn Lobachevksy’s, and atheists could learn H. P. Lovecraft’s.

OK, so maybe it is just funny if you are an amateur mathematician and a fan of H. P. Lovecraft. However, I am both :)

Mommy said the F-Word

August 4th, 2007 @ 8:29 pm

Well, tonight was the first night that I was in charge of giving Emily her bath. All said, I do not think that it went too badly for my second time to ever be involved in giving the baby a bath. She was good throughout the whole thing and even seemed to be fairly happy through most of it. After I picked her up and gave her to Ashley to dry, Ashley let the F-Word slip. You know, the most horrible of words that you can say around a new baby. That is right, she said fuss! Of course, it bothered Emily so much that she decided to do just that. She fussed. And fussed. And fussed. Finally, we got her dry and clothed and warm and she seemed to calm down. Ashley is rocking her before bed right now.

Emily has had a big day. She went to a work cookout with Ashley and I. She got to meet most of my coworkers, their spouses, and kids. She even got toted around by some of them. After all that excitement, we have had a bit of a hard time getting her to calm down tonight, but she is just so tired that I think she will sleep for a while, even though Mommy said the F-Word :)

Emily in Columbus, Take 2

August 1st, 2007 @ 9:28 pm

Well, Ashley and Emily have made it back from the second trip to Columbus. Behold! The baby is huge!

TiVo HD official

July 24th, 2007 @ 3:28 pm

While most of our readers will not care, the TiVo HD is now official. From a storage standpoint, the TiVo HD will not store any more hours of HD programming than the Knology DVR that I currently have. However, I would be gaining the nice, shiny TiVo software that I fondly remember in my pre-HD days. While TiVo has had an HD capable DVR (the Series 3) for about a year now, the Series 3 rang in at around $800. The new TiVo HD will retail for a mere $299 — a much more affordable price for those of us with a new baby. Now, I just need to confirm that Knology will provide CableCARDs and I can finally ditch their DVR for TiVo goodness once again.

Photos are back

Well, we finally straightened out the issue we were having with the photos on the site. So, without further ado, photos from Emily’s first trip to Columbus.

Photos down

July 20th, 2007 @ 3:06 pm

For those who have been asking, yes, I know that our photos are down. I am having a problem with the plugin that I use to pull our pictures over from Flickr. I am working to get it fixed. When I fix the problem, I will get our latest pictures posted.

Treo 1, Washing Machine 0

July 13th, 2007 @ 11:18 am

Well, after have a cell phone for 8 years, the unthinkable finally happened: I left my Treo in my pants pocket when I threw my pants into the rapidly filling washer last night. Luckily, I figured what what happened based on the weight of the pants as I put them in the wash, so I immediately pulled them back out and retrieved my Treo. Alas, it appeared to be too late because the Treo looked to be dead. I was thankful that I had synced the Treo before I left work. However, after pulling the battery out and carefully using Ashley’s hair dryer to dry up as much water as possible, I left the Treo out to dry overnight while I researched what new smartphone I would be purchasing to replace my expensive screwup. This morning I figured I would try to see if I could get it to boot before I moved the SIM card to Ashley’s old phone. Amazingly it still works! I have been messing around with it all morning and have not noticed any glitches. I will keep an eye on it for a while to make sure that everything seems to be OK, but it looks like I dodged the bullet this time.

Barbecue goodness

July 9th, 2007 @ 3:21 pm

As I was driving down Hughes Rd. today, I noticed that Madison is getting a Lawler’s Barbecue not five minutes away from our house. Considering I was out doing errands during my lunch hour, seeing the sign declaring that Lawler’s was coming soon drove my appetite through the roof.

Two weeks with Emily

June 23rd, 2007 @ 12:19 pm

Well, another week with Emily brings more pictures, this time with hair and eyeballs!. There are times that I think we are getting this and then we have nights like the last two nights that just make you want to pull your hair out. Mom will be glad to hear that I apparently have a kid just like me: she just decides that she does not want to sleep. Last night I gave up and called Ashley after four hours of rocking, burping, walking, and screaming (all her), two bottles, six or seven diapers, and a grand total of ten minutes sleep over a course of six hours. Of course, Ashley walked her for 30 minutes and then Emily crashed for almost eight hours. So, that was kind of rough. Hopefully we will be able to get her into some kind of a better routine in the next couple of weeks, especially with me going back to work on Monday.
