A New Focus Going Forward

With the new year underway, I have decided to refocus this site on more family- and personal-oriented notes. Thus, I am launching Selected Topics, a place for me to talk more about the engineering- and learning-focused notes. So, if you liked the Inside the Engineer type of articles, you can follow along over at Selected Topics. I have set up a Twitter account that will follow along with that site as well.

So, as the first post on the new site, I present my Books Read of 2010 — 1 of 4. I hope you will join me over there.

There are no pictures in this post. If that is all you are looking for, skip this and come back later Ok, now that is out of the way. Some of you may or may not have noticed that our site was down for a day or so. Apparently, the server had some serious hard drive problems that required them to be replaced. Geof spent the better part of a day backing up and restoring the server to get everything back up and running — while still managing to work a day job! Geof, I just wanted to say that I appreciate everything you do to keep our site (and all of the other sites you host) up and running. I know that it can be a thankless job, so THANK YOU!

For those who have been asking, yes, I know that our photos are down. I am having a problem with the plugin that I use to pull our pictures over from Flickr. I am working to get it fixed. When I fix the problem, I will get our latest pictures posted.

New Look

Ever since we got back from Oregon, I have been looking for a way to use some of the pictures that we took on our trip. Now, one of them has been integrated into the new look of this site. There may be some subtle changes to the look of the site over the next several days as I tweak colors, but so far I like the look of it enough to go live.

I am gradually working on a new theme for the site. However, it is going slow and I keep adding things that are missing from the current theme. For instance, since I switched to this new theme, the author names have been missing. That should be fixed now.

While killing time on the site, I decided to create a parent category for the two dog categories, Snobbers and The Gutless Wonder. My choice was Canine Commandos. While checking the spelling, I realized just how appropriate my choice of commandos was: A small fighting force specially trained for making quick destructive raids against enemy-held areas. Some days that description seems to fit our dogs exactly.

I have finally gotten tired of this site’s previous theme. The theme fit the mood of the site, but it had a few usability problems. I spent a little time tonight looking at different themes until I found a nice, simple, clean theme that will ultimately serve as the basis for my own custom theme. Expect more changes as time goes by…
